| I saw upon the hill a man, lifted to the heavens. Upon His head He wore a crown…one of thorns piercing His brow. His arms were open wide…for they were nailed there. His body hung and the blood fell. I looked from afar yet I could see plainly those who came to Him. The closer they came to Him, the more I could see them change. One by one they approached Him and drop by drop the blood fell. Suddenly, I knew that I needed to know this one who hung there and I approached the cross. There at the foot of the cross I knelt and prayed…and the blood fell. He was wounded for me: for all that I had done, for all that I had become. Then he died…and the blood fell. I looked up again when I felt a hand rest upon my shoulder. I stood to greet this person. I realized that the cross was now empty and there beside me was a living Savior, my living Savior. I came to the cross for at its foot is where the blood fell. tsf |

| . . . if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son, cleanses us from all sin. . . If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
1 John 1:7, 9 |
| We must each one say, "He loved me, and gave Himself for me." In his blood you must be personally washed; by his blood you must be personally reconciled to God; through his blood you must personally have access to God; and by his blood you must personally overcome the enemy of your souls...Jesus' suffering, bleeding, dying, has procured for sinners the forgiveness of their sins. The blood of the covenant takes every sin away, be it what it may; there was never a sin believingly confessed and taken to Christ that ever baffled his power to cleanse it. This fountain has never been tired in vain. It is pardon, freely given, acting immediately, and abiding forever, to that there is no fear of the guilt ever being again laid to the charge of the forgiven one. Through the precious blood our sins are blotted out, cast into the depths of the sea, and removed as far from us as the east is from the west. Our sins cease to be; they are made an end of; they cannot be found against us any more forever. . . There is absolute remission of sin! The precious blood of Christ cleanses from all sin: yes, turns the scarlet into a whiteness which exceeds that of the newly-fallen snow--a whiteness which never can be tarnished. Washed by Jesus, the blackest of sinners shall appear before the judgment-seat of the all-seeing Judge without a spot. How is it that the blood of Jesus effects this? The secret lies in the vicarious or substitutionary character of our Lord's suffering and death. Because he stood in our places the justice of God is vindicated, and the threatening of the law is fulfilled. It is now just for God to pardon sin. Christ bearing the penalty of human sin instead of men has made the moral government of God perfect in justice. . . This is the great secret, this is the heavenly news, the gospel of salvation, that through the blood of Jesus, sin is justly put away. Oh, how my very soul loves this truth! (C. H. Spurgeon, Sermons Preached in 1887, Vol. xvii, pp. 227-228). |

| A careful study of the Word of God shows that blood is mentioned throughout the Scriptures. Why is it such an important topic? Because the Bible tells us that life is in the blood. "For the life (the animal soul) is in the blood, and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life [which it represents]" (Lev. 17:11, The Amplified Bible).
Just as light is the only thing that can conquer or overcome darkness, so life is the only thing that can conquer or overcome death. When God created Adam, He formed him out of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being (see Gen. 2:7). Adam already had blood, but there was no life in him until God breathed His own life into him. Life is a spiritual substance, but it must have a physical carrier. Blood carries the life of God, for He is life. The blood of Jesus is special because His was not a normal birth. He was born of a virgin, with God as His Father. The virgin birth of Jesus is vitally important because of the blood. Adam, the first man, was created without sin. The life of God was in him, but after he allowed sin in his life, his sin was passed on to every human being born after him. Adam's sin was passed down through his blood. David acknowledged this truth in Psalm 51:5: "Behold, I was brought forth in [a state of] iniquity; my mother was sinful who conceived me [and I too am sinful]." Jesus came to redeem mankind, to purchase our freedom and to restore us to our original state. How could He possibly do that with sinful blood? Jesus is referred to as the last Adam in 1 Corinthians 15:45, which states, "The first man Adam became a living being (an individual personality); the last Adam (Christ) became a life-giving Spirit [restoring the dead to life]." There is life in the blood of Jesus, and when it is properly applied, the life in His blood will conquer and overcome the death that works in us through sin. After God created Adam in His own image He placed him in the garden with authority over everything else He created. Yet Adam succumbed to temptation and subsequently turned over the authority he received from God to Satan, setting the stage for the redemption that Christ's blood would provide. God wants to restore us to the place of authority that is ours. He has already made all the arrangements. We might say that He has "sealed the deal." The purchase price has been paid in full. We have been purchased with a price, the precious blood of Jesus. |
